On Saturday December 7, in bright sunshine and bracing temperature, Santa welcomed hundreds of children and parents to the Maple Hall and Cumberland’s Christmas Market opened its doors at the RJ Kennedy Community Centre and St. Andrew’s United Church at 9 am sharp.
With a filling breakfast and Santa's good cheer people headed to the market to search for treasures. The cooperative weather the meticulous planning of the organizers (Mathieu Blanchard and Debra Wyatt) was handsomely rewarded with hundreds of shoppers, all with happy smiles on their faces. These smiles soon appeared on the vendors faces too, as business got under way, and by mid-morning it was difficult to move amidst the throng filling the aisles. Soon the volunteers manning the kitchens were called to action, with shoppers seeking some refreshment after the fulfilling purchases from artisan vendors. While the crowd did lighten up a bit towards the close at 4 in the afternoon the numbers certainly exceeded those of previous years by a large margin. Both new and established participants (vendors and shoppers) were in agreement that this was the most enjoyable Market of all. We can hardly wait for next year.
