Mayor’s Rural Expo & Food Aid

  • The annual Mayor’s Rural Expo and Food Aid BBQ is taking place at Festival Plaza, City Hall on Thursday, June 2 this year

Farmers' Markets in Rural Ottawa

With the arrival of spring, farmers' markets are set to open soon across rural Ottawa. Be sure to visit for the vegetables, fruit, meat, arts and crafts and other products that local producers have to offer.

New Waste Collection Calendar is Coming

  • Get ready to make space on your refrigerator or in your garage; the City’s new 12-month waste collection calendar will be delivered by mail to residences across the city starting in May.
  • The calendar starts in June 2016 and runs until May 2017. It features information about regular and holiday collections schedules, Giveaway Weekends, Household Hazardous Waste Depot dates and locations and much more.
  • Residents can visit ottawa.ca to view the calendar online, and sign up to receive weekly collection reminders by email, phone or Twitter. They can also visit the City's waste explorer tool to learn which items go in the blue, black and green bins.

Community Environmental Projects Grants Program – June 1 deadline

  • Are you looking for an opportunity to put your environmental ideas into action?  The City of Ottawa is now accepting applications for the 2015 Community Environmental Projects Grant Program (CEPGP). 
  • CEPGP has funding available to community groups and non-profit organizations who want to undertake environmental projects in the areas of improving stormwater management, enhancing and protecting natural systems, or reducing our environmental impact.
  • The application deadline is Monday, June 1, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.

Green Acres - Ottawa's Rural Reforestation Program

The City of Ottawa's Green Acres Program is looking for empty idle fields to be transformed into thriving green woodlands. The program provides landowners with advice and assistance in setting up a proper planting plan for their property (or properties).

Landowners must be rural property owners in the City of Ottawa, have a minimum of 0.4 hectares (1 acre) of suitable land and must agree to cover the subsidized cost of the tree seedlings, site preparation, planting and tending as well as agreeing to reasonably protect the plantation. The Green Acres Program will provide landowners with:

  • Subsided tree seedlings;
  • Advice and assistance in setting up a proper planting plan; and
  • Assistance caring for the trees after they are planted

The funding is provided to a maximum of 50% on a cost shared basis. Applicants must contact the LandOwner Resource Centre to verify that the proposed project is located in the eligible area and meets the funding guidelines.

Burn Permits

  • Now that the nice weather is here, make sure you obtain a burning permit before you start to burn.  
  • Open Air Fire Permits can be obtained at any City of Ottawa Client Service Centre.
  • The following client service centres only issue Open Air Fire Permits, one day per week, in accordance with the following schedule.
  • Metcalfe - 8243 Victoria St., Metcalfe, ON K0A 2P0 - Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Open Air Fire Permits can also be obtained at the following Rural Fire Administration Offices below. Please contact the office you wish to visit by phone in advance to ensure that someone is available to assist you upon arrival.

Ontario Renovates Program Overview

  • The Ontario Renovates Program administered by the City of Ottawa’s Housing Services Branch, provides limited funding to low income seniors who own their home and to persons with disabilities for necessary home repairs and accessibility modifications to support independent living. The program is also available to qualifying landlords to modify their existing units or buildings to make them more accessible to eligible seniors and persons with disabilities.
  • Homeowners who are 65 years of age or older, persons with disabilities and/or families with a household member(s) that have a disability, may qualify for assistance, if the property is eligible and if the total gross annual income of the household meets the income requirements. Farm Grant Program

The City of Ottawa Farm Grant Program provides financial relief to working farmers. The grant program will assist eligible farm property owners by allowing the June final tax instalment to be paid in December.

To qualify for the grant, the following conditions must be met:

  • The property must be defined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation in the farmlands property class
  • The property must not be owned by a commercial enterprise
  • Taxes have been paid up to date before the June instalment
  • he final  tax instalment billed (mailed May) is paid in full in early December

How the program will work:

  • Penalty charges will continue
  • Notification of the amount to be paid will be communicated to you in the fall
  • The grant amount will be the equivalent of the penalty charges and fees added to your account during the deferral
  • The City will automatically calculate and apply a credit for the grant amount to your tax account; there is no application to fill out

Property Tax Deferral Program for Low-Income Seniors and People with Disabilities

  • The City of Ottawa offers two property tax deferral programs for low-income seniors and low-income people with disabilities. Eligible homeowners may apply for a full or partial deferral of annual property taxes. Application for tax deferral must be made annually to the City of Ottawa to establish eligibility or confirm continued eligibility.
  • You may apply for one of the following programs: Full Property Tax Deferral Program or Partial Property Tax Deferral Program. For more information, visit ottawa.ca or call 613-580-2740.

Rural Well Water Testing Drop-off Schedule

  • Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has established permanent sites across Ottawa where well owners can drop off their water samples and pick up new bottles for future testing to make it more convenient for residents living on residential well systems to have their well water tested for free. As part of the improved program, residents can drop off their water samples every Tuesday at one of these locations (see chart below).
  • Residents wishing to drop off their samples and pick up testing bottles may also continue to do so during regular business hours at OPH’s main office – Mary Pitt Centre (100 Constellation Drive) or at the Ontario Public Health Laboratory (2380 St. Laurent Blvd)
  • This service will be provided year round and testing for bacteria continues to be offered free of charge. OPH also recommends testing for nitrates. If you are in an agricultural area, you may also wish to test for pesticides, herbicides, gasoline and solvents.
